Ashland Skate Park

Ashland Skate Park

Skateboarding is not merely a means of transport or sport but encases an entire subculture within itself, where skaters are associated with individuality, liberty and risk. Skateboarding is an autonomous community where people can participate without constraint and develop a distinctive identity, approach and lifestyle. My project engages 300 North Ashland Place (Brooklyn, New York) as a site that is an indoor skatepark specifically tailored to the people of the skateboarding community while connecting spectators and other potential members who may have preconceived notions about the subculture. To accomplish this, there are programmatic elements such as a multi-level skatepark, a film and photography studio, a retail space and a cafe. The use of color, materiality, and graphics allow for a distinction between spaces in a non-structural way as well as acts as components of way-finding.
